You killed a cockroach. Why the problem isn’t solved
Squashing the cockroach on your kitchen bench feels like a win. Here’s why it usually isn’t, and how professional cockroach control in Melbourne actually ends an infestation.

You flicked on the kitchen light, saw a cockroach run across the bench and smashed it. Problem solved? Unfortunately, probably not. That one cockroach is rarely the whole story. It’s usually just the one you were lucky enough to see.
Cockroaches hate light. So why was this one out?
Cockroaches avoid light. They spend the day packed into cracks, wall voids and the warm gaps behind appliances, and come out to feed mostly in the dark. The ones you see are the ones that had a reason to be out in the open.
A common reason is crowding. When the hidden spots fill up, cockroaches spread out and start turning up where you can see them, sometimes even during the day. That’s why technicians treat a sighting as a warning sign, not a one-off.
The cockroach on the bench is a symptom. The colony behind the fridge is the problem.
That weird stuff when you squash it
Most of the pale mess from a squashed cockroach is just its insides. But if it was a female German cockroach, the most common indoor species in Melbourne, there’s a real chance she was carrying an egg case. She holds it at the tip of her abdomen until it’s almost ready to hatch, and each one holds about 40 eggs.
An egg case that’s close to hatching can still produce young after the mother is dead. More importantly, she has very likely already dropped earlier egg cases somewhere you’ll never see.
One female German cockroach, over her lifetime
Egg to breeding adult takes about 100 days.
So finding and smashing one cockroach doesn’t solve anything. It removes one adult from a population that keeps breeding out of sight.
Melbourne’s usual suspects
Treatment depends on which cockroach you have, because each species lives and breeds in different places. These are the ones Australian pest controllers deal with most often.
| Species | Adult size | Where it hides |
|---|---|---|
| GermanMost common in Melbourne | 12–15 mm | Kitchens and bathrooms: wall cavities, behind fridges and dishwashers, under cabinetry |
| Oriental | 20–25 mm | Drains, subfloors, under porches and rubbish areas, often in older homes with drainage issues |
| Australian | 23–35 mm | Garden beds, mulch and timber piles. Comes inside at night through pipe gaps and under doors |
| Smoky brown | 30–35 mm | Roof voids, under floors and tree hollows. Drawn to outdoor lights |
| American | 35–40 mm | Subfloors, roof voids, drains, kitchens and bathrooms |
Melbourne’s cool winters matter here. German cockroach nymphs stop developing into adults below about 15°C, so in Melbourne homes they cluster where it stays warm: fridge motors, dishwashers, hot water units and heated wall cavities. A thorough inspection checks exactly those spots.
Why the $20 spray falls short
Supermarket sprays kill the cockroach you hit with them. The trouble is everything they don’t reach.
Can of surface spray
- Kills cockroaches it touches directly
- Rarely reaches wall voids, appliance motors or subfloors
- Does nothing to egg cases already laid
- Can drive cockroaches deeper into hiding
- Easy to overuse around food, kids and pets
Licensed technician
- Finds and identifies the species first
- Places products inside the hiding spots
- Combines baits with products that break the breeding cycle
- Uses registered products at label rates
- Follows up until activity stops
A spray treats what you can see. A professional treatment is built around what you can’t.
How professional cockroach control works in Australia
Good cockroach control is a strategy, not a single product. A typical treatment from a licensed Melbourne technician:
- 01
Inspect and identify
Your technician checks kitchens, bathrooms, laundry, roof and subfloor with a torch, looking for live cockroaches, droppings, shed skins and egg cases. Identifying the species decides everything that follows.
- 02
Gel baits in the hiding spots
Small dots of gel bait go into cracks, hinges, cabinet corners and the backs of appliances, right where cockroaches shelter. They eat it and spread it through the colony. Gel bait is regarded as the most effective option for German cockroaches.
- 03
Dusts in wall voids
Wall cavities, switch plates and service voids get a fine insecticidal dust that stays active in places no spray can reach.
- 04
Growth regulators to stop breeding
Insect growth regulators (IGRs) stop young cockroaches maturing and breeding. This is how the next generation, hatching from egg cases already laid, gets dealt with.
- 05
Perimeter and entry points
For outdoor species like Australian and smoky brown cockroaches, a residual treatment around the building, weep holes, drains and entry points stops new arrivals.
- 06
Follow-up visit
German cockroach treatments usually include a follow-up two to four weeks later, repeated until no activity is found. This catches the eggs that hatched after the first visit.
The right amount, the right product. Every pesticide used in Australia must be registered by the APVMA, and its label sets how much to use, where and how often. Technicians apply products at those label rates. More isn’t better: over-applying adds risk to your family and pets, and can make baits less attractive to cockroaches.
Licensing in Victoria. Anyone applying pesticides as part of a pest control business in Victoria must hold a Pest Control Licence from the Department of Health. You can check a technician’s licence online, ask for the full chemical name of each product, and raise any concerns about pregnancy, young children, pets or allergies before work starts. You’ll usually be asked to stay out of treated areas until products have dried. The Better Health Channel says four to six hours is generally recommended, but follow your technician’s advice for the products used.
What you can do between visits
Treatment works much faster when cockroaches have less food, water and shelter:
- Wipe benches and sweep floors every night, and take rubbish out daily.
- Store food, including pet food, in sealed containers. Don’t leave pet bowls out overnight.
- Fix dripping taps and leaks under sinks.
- Clean behind and under the fridge, stove and dishwasher.
- Cut down clutter like cardboard boxes and paper bags.
- Seal gaps around pipes and cracks in cabinetry.
- Don’t spray over bait placements. Surface spray can contaminate the bait and stop cockroaches eating it.
